It starts out with a young man who calls himself Freckles because he doesn't know his real name as he grew up in a "Home for the Unfortunates" and it was never revealed to him. He is looking for a job and befriends a lumber mine Boss named Mr. McLean who gives him the occupation of guarding the valuable trees from limber thieves in the Limberlost. He has to basically walk back and forth seven miles every so often to check.

With no one around him during his guarding he becomes "friends" with all the wildlife. He even learns how to hand feed them. One day, in the spring he finds a black feather and learns it once belonged to a black vulture which are rare in Indiana. A lady, The Bird Woman, soon comes to the Limberlost to take pictures when the vultures hatch chicks in a hollow tree. With her she brings The Angel who becomes great friends with Freckles.

Later, he is still wonderful friends with her and then things get tougher when timber thieves get aggressive. Other adventures come along with it and Freckles still doesn't know what his real name is.
