這本書應該是作者的處女作，雖然是這麼遙遠的作品，劇情也有點老套，但歐班揚阿姨寫起來仍然相當好看，剛開始看文案其實不是很愛，沒想到一看下去就停不了，想知道男女主角會如何的發展，不過看完到現在也有幾個月，大概快忘光了，只能憑記憶補一下。
故事背景是南北戰爭，女主角父兄都因參戰身亡，未婚夫也去打戰還沒回家，一日北軍軍人經過女主的家園，遂起歹念要玷辱女主，女主自衛以為自己殺了人，就和僕人逃亡投奔外婆(大概?)，半路上遇到一位軍官(男主角的好友)盤查，寫得讓我以為這個是男主角，還好戲份很快就沒了。
男女主角倆初遇時彼此都可以感受到強烈的吸引力，女主角因為自以為深愛著未婚夫，所以對其他男性都保持著距離，而我們高帥富又不想結婚的男主角知道女主角是純潔的之後，便保持距離不再接近她，但是男主角嫉妒自己的獸醫好友和女主角走得很近，就一廂情願的決定女主角應該嫁給他，但是男主角在追求女主的過程中屢踢鐵板，為愛傷神，女主角深受吸引但又不能背叛未婚夫，在愛與不愛之間掙扎，寫得相當有張力，後來結婚之後也有段相處的磨合期，並且發生一些事情考驗彼此，通常男女主角結婚之後我就會這本書喪失興趣，但是作者創造的劇情讓我無法停止閱讀，這本書很長但讓我熬夜看得相當過癮。
這本書仍然有歐班揚阿姨早期寫作的男女主角互虐模式，有時會說傷人的話，做傷人的事，不能接受者慎讀，推薦給喜歡看橫刀奪愛、花花公子為愛傷神、婚後相處、男主想馴服女主反被馴服、互虐的類型，有在看影集的感覺。
